Lithium Ethylene Dicarbonate Identified as the Primary Product of Chemical and Electrochemical Reduction of EC in EC:EMC/1.2M LiPF6 Electrolyte

چکیده
Lithium ethylene dicarbonate (CH2OCO2Li)2 was chemically synthesized and its Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrum was obtained and compared with that of surface films formed on Ni after cyclic voltammetry (CV) in 1.2M lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6)/ ethylene carbonate (EC): ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) (3:7, w/w) electrolyte and on metallic lithium cleaved in-situ in the same electrolyte. By comparison of IR experimental spectra with that of the synthesized compound, we definitively established that the title compound is the predominant surface species in both instances. Detailed analysis of the IR spectrum utilizing quantum chemical (Hartree-Fock) calculations indicates that intermolecular association through O···Li···O interactions is very important in this compound. It is likely that the title compound in passivation layer has a highly associated structure, but the exact intermolecular conformation could not be established based on analysis of the IR spectrum.

A Study of Electrochemical Reduction of Ethylene and Propylene Carbonate Electrolytes on Graphite Using ATR-FTIR Spectroscopy
It is well known that when propylene carbonate (PC) is used as the primary solvent with common inorganic salts like LiPF6 there is essentially continuous electrolyte reduction with a graphite electrode at ca. 0.9 V vs. Li/Li, accompanied by gassing and graphite exfoliation. However, co-intercalation and subsequent reduction occurs only with PC and not the chemically closely related solvent ethy...

It is now generally agreed that the electrochemical reduction of ethylene carbonate ~EC! plays an important role in the formation of an effective solid electrolyte interface layer on the carbon anode in lithium-ion cells. However, neither the composition of this layer nor the reaction pathways involved in its formation have been clearly established. We report reflectance infrared spectra from a...

To improve the safety of lithium ion batteries, a multi-component (MC) additive (consisting of vinylene carbonate (VC), 1,3-propylene sulfite (PS) and dimethylacetamide (DMAC)) is used in the baseline electrolyte (1.0 M LiPF6/ethylene carbonate (EC) + diethyl carbonate (DEC)). The electrolyte with the MC additive is named safety electrolyte. The thermal stabilities of fully charged Li(Ni1/3Co1/...

The composition of the lithium cation (Li(+)) solvation shell in mixed linear and cyclic carbonate-based electrolytes has been re-examined using Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD) as a function of salt concentration and cluster calculations with ethylene carbonate:dimethyl carbonate (EC:DMC)-LiPF6 as a model system. A coordination preference for EC over DMC to a Li(+) was found at low s...
